Benjamin is really terrible at napping. He desperately fights sleep and his naps usually aren’t very long. Today while rocking him I made a connection. Watching him pick his head up and lay it back down over and over in an attempt to stay awake is exactly how we tend to treat God.
God wants us to find our rest in Him. We tend to fight off His comfort, looking for it in things of this world, when we really only need to be still and allow His hand to comfort us. Like Benjamin’s short naps, we also tend to leave that rest too soon once we find it. It seems like just about the time I’m feeling right with God, something pops up that throws me off the feeling of peace within Him. I’m continuing to work hard on letting God hold my heart.
The good part about all of this is that God is not human. I’ll admit, sometimes I get frustrated with Benjamin’s unwillingness to nap, so I just lay him in his crib and hope for the best. God never loses His patience with us. He’ll rock us for eternity if that’s what it takes for us to remember that we are His and we can find rest in Him.
I encourage you to find your peace with the One who can truly help your soul find rest.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” -Matt 11:28
